Developmental Edit Basics

A developmental edit for nonfiction writing (aka Structural or Content edit) is a detailed analysis of the structure of your manuscript.

A developmental edit provides you with the same elements of a Manuscript Review, with the addition of an analysis of how your manuscript flows, what is missing, what is excess, and how to best organize your content for the most impact for the reader.

Your developmental edit will look at the following elements:

  • Thematic cohesion
  • "Plot" and argument flow
  • Chapter and section placement
  • Pacing
  • Clarity of message
  • Themes, take-aways, guiding question
  • Scenic depiction with showing vs. telling
  • Transitions
  • Illustrative stories and dialog
  • Reader engagement
  • Marketability

The Process

  • 1 I read your manuscript in detail and make notes as I go. I note where the narrative is easy to follow or not, and make suggestions for how to structure or organize the content for better flow.
  • 2 I provide you with a detailed written summary including what sings, which areas need more fleshing out, suggestions for what I feel is missing content, recommendations for structure and flow, questions, and next steps to get your manuscript ready for beta readers
  • 3 We have a 60-minute Zoom session to discuss my review.

Investment: $.015 to .02 per word
